How complex can the data extraction be

How complex can the data extraction be for a lookup? For instance, can you use joins, etc.?

  The Manual tab of the lookup dialog allows any SQL statement to be entered. For a lookup, it must result in two fields, Name and Value, but any query you can build in your favorite SQL query building tool can be pasted into this space and will run.
