Can I assign a user written in a textbox as a task participant?

I made a lookup from a database to identify the manager from the person that is the process initiator of the application , but when i try to assign that username as a task participant , it doesnt work?

is there a way to do this? or is it just possible using people picker or user list tool?

  Yes ,You can assign a TextBox value as task participant . 

  But make sure the TextBox contains fully qualified UserName  (Example : if it's AgilePoint ID  then use Domain\UserName) . 

  And yes you can also use People Picker control or UserList control for this purpose and you can set the control as participant .
