PDF number formatting not working

I have create the word document with mergefields to create a PDF.  All of the number fields are displaying as text.  They are ignoring the field codes in the word doc for formatting.  such as /# ,0 - to have thousand separator.

I have tried using quotes around field names, around field codes, a wide variety of field codes, and just about every other suggestion found when searching for mergefield number formatting.

Using the Advanced mapping (there are over 200 fields to map) any field that is not text/string is showing a red connector.   Which the schema mapper documentation says is type mismatch, however I do not see how to edit the schema mapper.

Also in you documentation

  In create PDF, it always gets the data that is in the schema.  Please check schema data in the Manage Center, if the number fields has the thousand separator, then it will be created in Word.  Because the data you see in the form is not the same in the schema (i.e. for number controls).  If you see the red connector, then you cannot map those as the data types do not match.
